These pages discuss the main philosophical arguments for the existence of God. After many years of discussion with people on both sides of the issue, I have found that the same basic confusions and misunderstandings come up again and again. There are many websites that deal with the same issues but, in my opinion, either they are too abstruse and technical or they indulge in dissing the other point of view. A theist would argue that God does not require men to have a Phd in philosophy to know him. I would agree. If one does not show one's adversary respect, there can be no discussion or honest examination of ideas. How can one ask a man to give one's own ideas careful consideration when one isn't willing to do the same? Therefore I have tried to cover the most important arguments in a straightforward fashion without resorting to sniping or mockery.
I intend these pages to serve as a resource to atheists and I hope also that theists will find them useful. I do not expect to make any converts. Over many years of debating this issue, I have never seen anyone abandon his convictions one way or the other. But I urge the theist to make a genuine effort to understand what he is up against. If he is to debate the non believers, there is no point in attacking a straw man since this leaves the real target unscathed. The real benefit of debate is not to persuade but rather to clarify his own ideas for one cannot properly understand one's own position until one clearly understands that of one's opponents.
It is not my belief, that men of faith are fools, dupes or stupid. Of course some are, but for the most part they are people trying to make some sense of what it means to be a human being.
